Active
Members who are admitted to practice law in the courts of this State and who are engaged in the practice of law, either full-time or part-time, salaried or non-salaried.

Associate
Members who have been admitted to practice law in the courts of Virginia, but who are not presently so engaged, and persons on the law faculties of any law schools in this State that have been approved by the ABA. Associate members may not practice law, vote or hold office in the Virginia State Bar.

Virginia Corporate Counsel
A lawyer certified by the Virginia State Bar to be employed by a corporation for the primary purpose of representing that corporation. The corporation must be physically located in Virginia, and it must be the lawyer's only client.

Emeritus
Active members leaving the active practice of law thereafter being eligible to do only pro bono work on a non fee basis for clients of an approved legal assistance organization and under the supervision of an active member of the Virginia State Bar. Must have been engaged in the active practice of law for a minimum of ten out of the last fifteen years immediately preceding this status change.
