Thomas E. Hollenhorst, Associate Justice
Justice Hollenhorst has been an associate justice of the
Court of Appeal, Fourth Appellate District, since 1988. Previously
he was the judge of the Riverside County Superior and Municipal
Court and worked for the county as the acting district attorney,
assistant district attorney and deputy district attorney. Justice
Hollenhorst is the former chair of the Center for Judicial Education
and Research's (CJER) Governing Committee, a member of the ABA
appellate judge seminar series planning committee, judicial advisory
board member of the University of Kansas Law and Organizational
Economics Center, a chair or member of various CJER planning
committees, and a faculty member for CJER programs and institutes.
He is also a member of the Appellate Indigent Defense Oversight
Committee and the California Judges Association Ethics Committee. He
was vice-president of CJA and a member of its executive board. He
received a B.A. from San Jose State College in 1968, a J.D. from the
University of California, Hastings College of Law in 1971, and an
L.L.M. from the University of Virginia School of Law in 1995.
Justice Hollenhorst is also a trustee of ASTAR, a advisory board
member of the Center for Neuroeconomics at Claremont Graduate
University and is currently Chair of Judicial Education for the
Appellate Judge Conference of the American Bar Association. He
currently serves on two Judicial Council Advisory Committees: The
Science and Law Steering Committee and the Criminal Law Advisory
Committee. He also Chairs the CJER Ethics Education Committee and
regularly teaches ethics courses to California Judges.
Justice Hollenhorst is a past recipient of the Jefferson Award
from the California Judges Association for his contributions to
judicial education and has taught judicial education courses in
several states and foreign countries.
Justice Hollenhorst is married to Beth Hollenhorst and is the
father of two adult sons.
