Gilbert Nares, Associate Justice
Justice Gilbert Nares was appointed by Governor Deukmejian
in 1988 after serving as a San Diego County Superior Court Judge
since 1978 and a Municipal Court Judge since 1976. In the superior
court, Justice Nares served on the Appellate Department in 1986 and
1987, and was Supervising Judge for the court’s North County Branch
in 1981 and 1982. Justice Nares was also the Presiding Judge of the
Municipal Court’s North County Judicial District in 1977.
Before appointment to the bench, Justice Nares was in private
practice from 1968 to 1976 with the firm of Daubney, Banche,
Patterson & Nares, in Oceanside, California, and in 1974 he was
elected President of the Bar Association of Northern San Diego
County. Justice Nares was on the Board of Trustees of the Oceanside
Public Library from 1974 until 1976, and was a member of the Board
of Trustees of the San Diego County Law Library from 1976 to
1986.
Justice Nares was admitted to the California Bar in 1968 and the
United States Supreme Court in 1971. He graduated from the
University of San Diego in 1964 (Economics and Philosophy), and
received his J.D. degree from the University of San Diego School of
Law in 1967. He was selected as a Distinguished Alumnus in 1984. He
was born in Oceanside on February 28, 1943.
