It was a convention for one's name
at that time. It still is!

You get the U.S. Constitution on disk,
in a popular word processor format,
so you can do your own searching
for key words, and such. I find an
electronic copy of the Constitution
to be immensely useful. For example,
where are all occurrences of:

"Citizen of the United States" [sic]?

It has misspellings, and the Preamble
to the Bill of Rights is missing.
