"ping" is an Internet convention,
for testing a pairwise connection,
through all 7 layers of the communication
protocol. There is also a program named
PING, which does the same test, with
small packets of arbitrary text.

It was also a chilling moment in the
movie "The Hunt for Red October,"
when the Russian captain orders his
crew to generate a single sonar "ping,"
as a way of getting the attention of
the American sub captain.

So, the origin of this idea is
underwater sonar.
