Subject: L&J: Discretion is the better part of valor.

Also, because Roman general Pyrrhus (I believe
that was his name) fought a battle which
he won, but he also lost all of his men
in the process. This is now called a
pyrrhic victory -- something which generals
and commanders avoid like the plague.
You don't get promoted for pyrrhic victories,
so you exercise discretion at all times and,
in so doing, you exhibit valor, even if not
fighting might appear cowardly. In the Cuban
Missile Crisis, JFK chose discretion by
blockading Cuba, rather than to blow the
cargo ships out of the water, or incite
any other kinds of violence or direct
damage to the opponent's men and equipment.
