Dear America,

My mother had passed away the day before,
and I was returning home via Orange County
Airport, in Santa Ana, California state,
when the agent at the ticket counter
announced that I had been "chosen" for the
special "random" security search.

She then escorted me to the security
checkpoint, where I was told I would be
required to open my brief case, and the
security guard would search it thoroughly.

When the security guard opened the brief case,
he reached in and began to sort the objects
which he found inside there.

He pointed at these small, cylindrical objects
with something like "fuses" protruding out of
the top of the cylinders.

"What's THAT??" he demanded, in a rude and
obnoxious voice.

I reached into the brief case, picked up
one of the objects, and handed it to the
security guard.

"My mother passed away yesterday. Won't you
please light one of these votive candles,
to honor her passing?" I asked.

I then turned my gaze at the ticket agent,
who was officiously supervising this random,
thorough security search.

Her face had turned ashen, and her smirk was gone.

That is American airport security, contemporary
style.
