Now, as a former compiler programmer,
I can tell you, with 100% certainty
(oh, make that 99%, if you are using
Bill Gates' software), a space is
a character.  There are significant
spaces, and insignificantspaces.

It depends on the language!

In the District of Columbia, 
space is very significant.  :)
