And the "several" States is synonymous with
the "federal" States.

“[...] the citizens of each State shall be
entitled to all the privileges and immunities
of citizens in the federal States, [...]”
Annals of Congress, 8th Cong., Senate,
The Louisiana Treaty, p. 51, November, 1803.

The "several" States are the States in their
confederated capacity, i.e., the United States
of America as styled in the Articles of
Confederation and often referred to in
historical documents as "confederated states".

: : : I'm just a dumb factory worker but, even I know United State would be singular while United States is plural. Treason against the United States still consists only in levying war against them, (plural) or, (not and), adhering to their,(plural) enemies, giving them aid and comfort. I think the reason for the confusion is that lawyers think precedents shall be the supreme law of the land. It's understandable that the Constitution has been so misconstrued if the precedents are considered in view of the Constitution. The first Congress, rather than direct by law where a trial of crime not committed in any State would be, gave power to the judicial courts of the United States not delegated in the Constitution, and levied a whiskey tax not by aportionment. The first president with the consent of Congress raised an army and levied war against a State to collect the tax directly. I don't know where the first Supreme Court was at that time, these issues were not settled judicially. But then the judicial power of the United States only extends to cases in law and equity. That's and, not or equity. If the United States is singular it's only because the judges in every State have been ignorant of their duty, or adhere to some folks who don't abide by law.....Girty.....

: Objection.

: The Guarantee Clause clearly distinguishes
: "United States" from the several States of
: the Union. It is immaterial that the term
: "States" in "United States" is plural.
: By analogy, "Philippine Airlines" is a
: commercial air carrier.

: The Hooven case finally admitted that the
: term "United States" has three entirely
: different meanings. That is the source of
: the confusion.

: The "United States of America" is a term
: which is synonymous with the several
: States of the Union, i.e. the States United!
